JONATHAN HILES, ESQ.

Jonathan has represented victims of wrongful convictions and civil rights violations since 2014. He has helped to exonerate multiple men serving decades-long sentences and has handled all phases of innocence cases, from reinvestigation to courtroom advocacy. He has briefed or argued several successful post-conviction motions and appeals as well as civil rights lawsuits.

In civil cases, Jonathan has helped secure seven- and eight-figure settlements for exonerees, including Kareem Bellamy, Robert Majors, Rohan Bolt, and Gary Johnson. He also co-authored the appeals briefs in Bellamy v. City of New York, 914 F.3d 727 (2d Cir. 2019), which expanded civil liability for prosecutorial misconduct in New York. More recently, he argued a successful appeal in Cooper v. State, 236 A.D.3d 749 (2d Dep’t 2025), which advanced a liberal application of New York’s Unjust Conviction and Imprisonment Act.

Prior to partnering with Tom Hoffman, Jonathan worked on wrongful conviction lawsuits and criminal appeals at the Law Offices of Joel B. Rudin, a leading criminal defense and civil rights law firm. He also worked at Sanford Heisler Sharp McKnight representing whistleblowers and employees challenging workplace discrimination and harassment.

Outside of litigation, Jonathan is an advocate for policy reforms, speaking at rallies, lobbying legislators, and helping to draft and promote legislation to give wrongfully convicted New Yorkers the chance to prove their innocence in court. Jonathan has also served as a staffer and volunteer on several Democratic campaigns, including as a voter protection director and as a campaign manager for a district attorney candidate. Prior to law school, he worked as a middle school teacher in Jackson, Mississippi. He is a graduate of Brown University and Harvard Law School.
